The App store is a seriously exciting place these days. It’s actually incredible how much really professional quality kit you can get hold of as an app for your iPad or iPhone. Whether you are a professional film-maker looking for some cheap options, or an amateur looking to jazz up your home movie collection, I’ve listed the top 10 film making apps below. Knock yourselves out!
At only $1.49 this app is incredibly good value for making films with the retro/film noir flicker. There are a number of different filters to choose from but it’s got a really lovely vibe to it and was famously used by Director Malik Bendjelloul in his Oscar-winning film “Searching for Sugar Man.”
This really is a professional app. It gives your iPhone better zoom capabilities, improved frame rates and audio recording capabilities, and has a lot of really useful professional (and customisable) presets such as image stabilization and audio/video encoding. It’s currently (for a limited time) offered at 50% off in the App store as part of the Amazing Photo & Video promotion.
The CinemaFX for Video is hugely exciting, because the previous incarnation of the app only worked with still images. The app comes with 20 cinematic layers you can use to tweak the texture of your films. And on top of that you have the option of in-app purchase packs to add to your collection.
This great free app from Fingerlab is a powerful time-lapse (my favourite) and stop motion app. You can take pics, edit movies and upload to Youtube from this app. You can even export HD 720p videos to your device (or Youtube).
In 2012 this app won 2 Webby awards. It’s based on, and part of a promotional package for the film ‘Super 8’, and gives the options of shooting similar styles. Full of excellent professional filters and lenses. One of the real selling points of this app is that it includes in-app editing capabilities.
This is a free 4-way split screen video camera app designed specifically for the iPad and iPhone. It’s quite retro (as is anything split-screen) but if you want split-screen effects, it’s one of the only options.
If you have a GoPro camera, then you need this app. It gives so much better control over the GoPro with access to the GoPro channel and remote access to your camera. If you don’t have a GoPro camera, but want one, you can buy one on Amazon here.
This is a really professional cinema treatment app designed with the same treatments as Hollywood uses. Choose from a range of looks from popular films, to black and white, to modern and edgy.
Videlicious is extremely versatile, fun and powerful app to help you create high quality interviews on your iPhone or iPad. A must-have for journalists, marketing professionals and students. It helps you bring together your video, voice-over/music and interviews in seconds. A really great production tool, and it’s completely free!
If you want to sync up to 4 devices live, or engage in live streaming, then this is the app for you. It includes in-app tutorials to help you get to grips with its capabilities. It’s free, but it does require you set up an account at www.switcherstudio.com
